This is a list of some of the Legacy casual decks that I used to play at game nights with my friends before Commander became a big thing. Some are my own creations, some have been inspired by work of others. Many of the decks in this section are meant to be played in a multiplayer format.

Big

Bigger is better, isn't it? This deck contains some pretty hard to beat creatures. With cards like Gyre Sage, Noble Hierarch, Courser of Kruphix, Somberwald Sage, Farseek, Kodama's Reach and Mirari's Wake, we attempt to quickly ramp up the mana pool to a point where it is possible to play these big critters early in the game. We can also use creatures like Elvish Piper or a spell like Tooth and Nail to get the big ones on the battlefield without paying the full mana cost. Aura spells, artifact equipments and land abilities make these big creatures even scarier.

Turn 1, cast Noble Hierarch. Turn 2, Somberwald Sage. Turn 3, you can cast Auratouched Mage, fetch Mythic Proportions to have a 11/11 trampler ready to attack on turn 4, or hard cast Plated Slagwurm, a 8/8 creature that can't be targeted and is ready to do lots of damage to your opponents' creatures.

Play Prophet of Kruphix to give all your creatures flash and let you creatures out during your opponents' turn.

Soldiers

This is the first deck I created. As more and more soldiers enter the battlefield, each soldier becomes more potent, gaining first strike, vigilance or +1/+1. Catapult Squad, combined with two or more soldiers, makes it possible for your soldier army to destroy enemy creatures before they can deal damage on your side. Surestrike Trident is a great finisher, especially in situations where combat damage is not an option anymore. Goldmeadow Harrier and Leonin Bola can protect you from your opponents's biggest threats. Leonin Bola can even be used to shutdown all of your opponents' creatures before beginning of combat if you equip multiple of your own creatures and activate Leonin Bola's ability to tap the enemy out. Coat of Arms gives each of your soldier a +1/+1 for each other soldiers on the battlefield. For instance, there will be a bonus of +3/+3 for each soldier when there are 4 soldiers on the battlefield. Knight-Captain of Eos allows you to perform fog-like effect on your enemy's combat phase to prevent combat damage from hitting you.

Sacrifice

Bring Grave Pact and Savra, Queen of the Golgari to the battlefield and wipe out your opponents' army by sacrificing creatures, reaping bonuses like increased strength/toughness, life gain and land fetch. Use Duress to remove spells from your opponents' hand that would be harmful to your vital permanents. Use Naturalize to get rid of non-creature spells. Generate tokens with Ant Queen, Mycoloth, Skeletal Vampire, Marsh Flitter and Endrek Sahr, Master Breeder that you can sacrifice later on to weaken your opponent and/or revive creatures from your graveyard with Golgari Guildmage. Gleancrawler brings back to your hand non-token creatures that would be sacrificed on your turn. This deck is especially effective in a multiplayer format.

Clone Wars

Copy your opponents' best creature spells with shapeshifters like Clone, Vesuvan Shapeshifter, Phyrexian Metamorph and Shapesharer, and take control of the creatures and other permanents that might cause you grief with spells like Confiscate and Bribery and creatures like Sower of Temptation and Roil Elemental. With Loxodon Warhammer, you can pump Riptide Mangler's power up by at least three each time its ability is activated. I really like the versatility of Mulldrifter which can be used solely as card draw early on (using Evoke) when mana is scarce. Once in play, using a shapeshifter to clone it can produce additional card draw. Use cards like Tolaria West, Expedition Map, Journeyer's Kite and Sylvan Scrying to tutor specific lands.

Angel of Destiny

This is a tribal angel deck with a multiplayer twist. Use disruptive spells like Day of Judgment, Ghostly Prison, Grasp of Fate, Story Circle, Comeuppance and Return to Dust early on to give you enough time to build the mana base that will let you play expansive angel creature spells. Voice of All and Pariah is a nice combo to deflect all damage dealt by opponents' creatures. Spirit Loop can be used either on your own creatures or your opponents' creatures to null combat damage.

Red-Green Tomatoes

Red/green direct damage focused deck. Use green permanents, like Sakura-Tribe Elder and Sachi, Daughter of Seshiro, which turn all shamans into mana producers to ramp up mana quickly and make some of the spells, like Comet Storm, more effective. Seedborn Muse and Rings of Brighthearth makes it possible for creatures doing direct damage to be twice as effective. Kiki-Jikki, Mirror Breaker and Siege-Gang Commander will get enough goblins on the battlefield to do a lot of direct damage to your opponent.

No Pain, No Gain

The goal of this deck is to drain the opponents' life with cards that do direct damage such as Breath of Darigaaz forces the opponents to lose life in different situations, for instance, when one of the controller's creatures attacks (Infectious Horror), when a creature enters the battlefield or when opponents draw cards (Underworld Dreams). Some cards also affect the controller, but the hope is that the opponents' life total will drop faster than the controller's life total. Whispersilk Cloak on Infectious Horror guarantees that all opponents lose life every combat, and ensures that it does not die from combat damage (since this damge cannot be blocked). Death Pits of Rath turns a card like Breath of Darigaaz or Rain of Embers into a sort of Day of Judgement. Some cards are playable from the graveyard (Magma Phoenix and Stinkweed Imp) and ensures that even if they are destroyed, they can be brought back. Cards like Akoum Refuge, Blood Artist, Blood Tithe, Exsanguinate, Blood Artist and Crypt Ghast can be used to gain life and prevent that the controller's life total dips below that of his or her opponents. Netherborn Phalanx can be used to tutor Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni, Coalhauler Swine, or Massacre Wurm.

Dragon Reanimator

This is a deck my friend Alain lent to me when I first started playing MTGO. It was quite effective at the time. It cheats out big fat dragons into the battlefield with cards like Bladewing the Risen, Goryo's Vengeance and Animate Dead. To fill the graveyard with creature to reanimate, use cards like Faithless Looting, Buried Alive, Entomb. Burying Anger will make reanimation quite brutal for your opponent.

The commander format is a format where opponents play with 100-card singleton decks that contains one commander. The commander must be a legendary creature and the mana that lands and/or other cards in this deck can generate is limited to the color of the commander. All cards, except for basic lands must be unique in the deck.

Each player starts with 40 life. The commander starts in the commander zone. Players can play spells from their hand or from the commander zone. If the commander dies or is exiled, the player has the choice to put it back in the commander zone. Every time a commander cycles to the commnader zone, the casting cost increases by 2. A player wins if all other players lose. A player loses if his/her life total becomes 0 or less or if it sustains 21 combat damage from any given commander.

For complete commander rules, please visit this page.

Token

The first commander deck presented on this page is a token-oriented deck. The commander, Rhys the Redeemed, is an excellent token generator. With help of cards like Doubling Season, Parallel Lives, Rings of Brighthearth and Seedborn Muse, it should be possible to bring to the battlefield a strong contingent of tokens. Cards like Cathars' Crusade, Mirror Entity, Craterhoof Behemoth and Overrun turn weak 1/1 tokens into powerful creatures. Bring Nullmage Shepherd or Aura Shards to the battlefield if you get overwhelm by artifacts or enchantments. Skullclamp, Mentor of the Meek, Shamanic Revelation and Mind's Eye, allow you to draw cards to get ahead of the game. Knight-Captain of Eos, along with any of the soldier generator cards allow you to be safe from your opponents attacks.

Sacrifice

The second commander deck is similar to the 60-card sacrifice deck, except for the presence of some tutor and draw cards to increase the probability to draw cards that force the opponents to sacrifice their own creatures, like Grave Pact, Dictate of Erebos or Butcher of Malakir. There is also a little bit more graveyard interaction with cards like Victimize, Meren of Clan Nel Toth and Grave Betrayal.

Abzan Token

The third commander deck centers around Ghave, Guru of Spores' ability to generate and make use of Saproling tokens and +1/+1 counters. This deck contains a few neat combos that leverage this commander's abilities. The following cards are pretty good at bringing +1/+1 counters on the table: Mikaeus, the Unallowed, Avenger of Zendikar, Doubling Season, Corpsejack Menace, Cathars' Crusade, Hardened Scales, Gavony Township and Oran-Rief, the Vastwood. Other cards make good use of +1/+1 counters: For instance, you can extend some more Woodfall Primus' destructive capability by adding +1/+1 counters on it. Triskelion gives you the ability to use +1/+1 counters to destroy your opponents creatures (dealing 1 damage for each removed +1/+1 counter). The ability to add +1/+1 counters on Spike Weaver makes it possible to repeatedly prevent combat damage.

The following cards make good use of Saproling tokens:

  • Ashnod's Altar can be used to generate mana: Each Saproling token can be sacrificed to increase the mana available in the mana pool, If Doubling Season and Slimefoot, the Stowaway are on the battlefield along with Ashnod's Altar, you can generate infinte number of Saproling tokens and drain life from all your opponents.
  • Aura Shards can be used to get rid of your opponents' artifact and/or enchantments (every time a creature comes into play),
  • Attrition uses the Saproling tokens as fodder for creature destruction.
  • Psychotrope Thallid and Skullclamp uses the Saproling tokens to draw cards.

In order for the right combos to get out, there are a number of tutor cards present in this deck: Enlightened Tutor, Demonic Tutor and Chord of Calling. The most powerful combination with Ghave, Guru of Spores is probably Ashnod's Altar (to generate mana) and Mikaeus, the Unallowed to repeat enter the battlefield triggered ability. If for instance Mikaeus, the Unallowed is on the battlefield and Acidic Slime dies, Acidic Slime returns to the battlefield with a +1/+1 counter on it. If Ghave, Guru of Spores is also on the battlefield, the +1/+1 counter on Acidic Slime can be used by Ghave, Guru of Spores to create a 1/1 Saproling token. If Acidic Slime dies afterward, it continues to return to the battlefield. Ghave, Ashnod's Altar and Geralf's Messenger or Puppeteer Clique can be used to drain life or empty graveyards. Another neat combo is Earthcraft with Ghave and Doubling Season . This combo will let you generate infinite tokens. Then, with cards like Blood Artist and Ashnod's Altar, you get infinite life gain and infinite life loss. There are a few cards that makes it possible to recycle cards from the graveyard: Eternal Witness and Sun Titan.

Mikaeux, the Unhallowed and Triskelion is an instant win condition.

Finally, This deck contains a number of disruption spells leveraging the green/black/white disruption strengths.

Orzhov Token

The next commander deck focuses on token generation to enable the commander, Teysa, Orzhov Scion to control the board. Turning all creartures into black creatures with Darkest Hour ensures that white Spirit tokens (now black) survive any destruction, whether it be a Retribution of the Meek or a Martyr's Bond, because a new Spirit token is created any time a black creature dies. Teysa, Darkest Hour, any one creature and Blasting Station give you an automatic win condition (infinite damage). Since Darkest Hour is key to this deck, tutors like Vampiric Tutor, Demonic Tutor and Enlightened Tutor are there to increase the probability to bring Darkest Hour to the battlefield. Cards like Obzedat's Aid, Nim DeathmantleYawgmoth's Will and Sun Titan provide recursion, which is essential to bring back the key pieces of the sacrifice strategy.

A couple of infinite combos of note with Darkest Hour:

The current deck list focuses more on winning by draining life then winning from a swarm strategy. This focus was inspired by the Tolarian Community College In Debt to Teysa video and the Teysa Karlov, Grand Envoy of Orzhov primer.

Boros Beatdown

The next deck is inspired by article Assembling a Legion. The idea of the original deck was to create a strong army contingent and leverage Aurelia's ability to have two combat phases per turn.

However inspiring this deck was to me, even after a couple iterations, it would not perform very well because of its high mana curve. I eventually came across another article on Aurelia (Boros Beatdown) that sounded much more promising. The deck that I now present is mostly based on this version. This new version is keeping the essence of combat synergy with creatures like Godo, Bandit Warlord, Seize the Day and Hero of Baldehold. The focus is now more on making Aurelia bigger than getting a strong army contingent. Most of the token generation cards are gone so are all cards that force opponents' permanents to come into play tapped. One of the key cards in this build is Sunforger. Sunforger makes it possible to invoke utility cards like Chaos Warp or Swords to Plowshares from your deck to disable your opponents' threats. Finally, there is a stronger focus on equipment cards, including equipment tutoring cards like Stoneforge Mystic, Stonehewer Giant, Steelshaper's Gift and Godo, Bandit Warlord. There are a few cards like Armageddon or Cataclysm to clear the board if your opponents become too strong.

Copy and Steal

The next Commander deck is based on a message titled [EDH] Sakashima the Impostor - Copy Steal Control on MTG Salvation Forum.

This is a fun deck to play as you can copy and steal the best permanents in play or in your opponents' deck. However you have to level up against numerous players. This is why there are cards that affect all opponents and/or multiple creatures like Cyclonic Rift, Mystic Remora, Evacuation and Sunder. The other thing to keep in mind is that although you can copy your opponents' best cards, you won't be able to leverage the full synergy of your opponents' decks because you will likely copy and/or steal from multiple decks.

Mystical Tutor, Fabricate, Drift of Phantasms and Tolaria West are used to tutor various cards (for instance, Sensei's Diving Top with Trinket Mage or Academy Ruins with Tolaria West). Riptide Laboratory can be used to retrigger enter the battlefield effects of cards like Trinket Mage.

The presence of fetch lands in this deck is threefold. They can first maximize the number of creatures that Roil Elemental can steal. They also serve as a trigger to reshuffle if the cards seen with Sensei's Divining Top are not that interesting. Finally, they can ensure you never miss a land drop if you can manage to get Crucible of Worlds on the battlefield.

No Pain, No Gain

You won't make many fans with the next Commander deck. This deck is based on the No Pain, No Gain deck presented earlier in this page. This deck attempts to drain the life of all players with spells that affect them most part of the game. For instance, Mogis, God of Slaughter may hurt opponents at the start of their upkeep unless they sacrifice a creature. When activated, Bloodchief Ascension deals damage every time a card is put in an opponent's graveyard. Underworld Dreams deals damage every time on opponent draws a card. Painful Quandary may deal damage to opponents that want to cast spells without dicarding cards. Manabarbs will hurt anyone that taps for mana. Most cards in this deck causes players to lose life.

Some of the cards, like Manabarbs, Citadel of Pain or Pestilence damages all players including yourself. However, the idea of this deck is to perform more damage on your opponents then you receive. In addition, as an extra safeguard, there are a few life gaining cards like Blood Artist, Exquisite Blood, Pristine Talisman, Exsanguinate and Gray Merchant of Asphodel, which might be helpful keeping your head above water.

The outcome is as follows: either your opponents gang up on you to get rid of your painful contraptions, either they all die a painful death.

Breed Lethality

This next commander deck is based on one of the Commander 2016 decks, Breed Lethality. Two of the most popular archetypes for this deck are planeswalker-oriented Super friends and infect. This build is however different and is closer to the original deck's philosophy of pumping creatures, especially Atraxa, with +1/+1 counters. Cards like Doubling Season, Hardened Scales and Corpsejack Menace makes the proliferation ever more effective. With Atraxa, you can proliferate all sorts of counters: +1/+1 counters, -1/-1 counters from Contagion Engine, charge counters from Astral Cornucopia or Coalition Relic, storage counters from Dreadship Reef and loyalty counters on Venser, the Sojourner.

Use your +1/+1 counters to remove creatures with Retribution of the Ancients or jam your board with Saprolings by proliferating and using Ghave, Guru of Spores' abilities, especially if Doubling Season or Parallel Lives are on your battlefield.

If your opponents' board state gets out of hand, use cards like Toxic Deluge, Merciless Eviction, Duneblast or even Mirrorweave. Mirrorweave especially can be one-sided if you target one of your creature that has 0 thoughness, like Ghave, Guru of Spores, Spike Weaver or Kalonian Hydra.

You can abuse Glen Elendra Archmage's ability to counter spells by placing +1/+1 counters on it. Spike Weaver and Atraxa, Venser, the Sojourner or Gavony Township make you immune to combat damage from your opponents. Use Fertilid to ramp, or help others ramp to get some allies on your side.

Atraxa gives you access to spells from four colors. This gives you a wide breadth of tools: removal, counter spells, ramp, etc. Reveillark, Eternal Witness and Volrath's Stronghold provide some form of recursion while Abzan Falconer and Tuskguard Captain provide some form of evasion. The first priority for this deck is to diverse your mana pool to allow you to play Atraxa as soon as possible. Your second priority will be to get +1/+1 counters on as many creatures as you can to make the proliferation as high impact as possible.

Graveyard

Our next commander deck is an graveyard-based deck. It is probably the most competitive deck on this page. The goal of this deck is to get value cards in your graveyard and get Meren of Clan Nel Toth to bring these cards back to the battlefield for free. When Meren is on the battlefield, you will benefit from your creatures dying. For instance, you could sacrifice a Caustic Caterpillar to destroy a valuable artifact or enchantment and be able to bring it back on the battlefield at end of turn. When your experience counters reaches three, you can start abusing Fleshbag Marauder to get rid of your opponents' creatures. There is a wide breadth of creatures' enter the battlefield effects in this deck to deal with problematic lands, creatures, enchantment and artifacts.

Buried Alive and Jarad's Order let you bring the creatures you need to your graveyard. Life from the Loam, Golgari Thug and Dakmor Salvage can also bolster your graveyard with their dredging ability (in addition to bringing cards back to your hand or library).

There are various tutor cards, some more traditional like Vampiric Tutor and Demonic Tutor, and some that also leverages the theme of this deck like Sidisi, Undead Vizier which sacrifice can actually make Meren more experienced. Survival of the Fittest and Birthing Pod can also be used to tutor the creatures you need, in addition to filling your graveyard with some more.

Sacrificing a creature to Victimize and leveraging Grave Pact or Butcher of Malakir can tip the balance in your favor.

This deck is most pwerful when Meren is on the battlefield, so expect your opponents to try getting rid of it. After two or three removals, it starts to be hard to cast Meren from the command zone. At this point, it may be wise to drop Meren in the graveyard and bring it back to your hand either with Eternal Witness or Golgari Thug or to the battlefield with cards like Dread Return.

Tranquil Thicket and Barren Moor coupled with Life from the Loam can help you both fill your graveyard with cards and help you draw cards using the cycling ability of these lands.

If you can cast Tooth and Nail with entwine to bring Mikaeus, the Unhallowed and Triskelion, you win the game. The presence of Boseiju, Who Shelters All is there to ensure that your Tooth and Nail is safe to play.

Turbo Fog

Our next commander deck is a Bant pillow fort deck. In this deck, you aim to survive long enough for one of your win conditions to take place. The first one is for Helix Pinnacle to get its 100th counter. The second is to play Approach of the Second Sun twice in the game. Another win condition is for Luminarch Ascension 's quest to resolve which allows you to flood the board with angel tokens. You might also win by exhausting your opponents, but that is probably unlikely if everybody starts focusing on you.

The following cards will help accelerating the Helix Pinnacle win condition: Seedborn Muse, Deepglow Skate with either Crystal Shard or Deadeye Navigator and Doubling Season.

Mairsil

Our next commander deck is built around Mairsil, the Pretender, one of the Commander introduced in Commander 2017. Mairsil has all activated abilities of permanents exiled with a cage counters. Mairsil can exile creature and artifact cards with cage counters when it enters the battlefield. Caged cards are exiled either from hand or graveyard, so this deck is not shy to fill the graveyard with cards like Faithless Looting, Windfall and Fact or Fiction. To get as many abilities as possible on Mairsil, there are several cards that can be used to bounce Mairsil: Ovinomancer, Deadeye Navigator, Argent Sphinx, Aetherling and Arcanis the Omnipotent.

Note that eventhough a creature card references its own name in its text such as is the case with Cavern Harpy, when Mairsil copies the ability, the ability targets him nevertheless.

Mairsil can only activate each ability once per turn. We can however circumvent this limitation with Quicksilver Elemental. If Quicksilver Elemental copies Mairsil's abilities, he is not impeded by the once a turn limitation. In addition, if Mairsil is bounced and has haste, once it reenters the battlefield, he can use all of his abilities one more time.

Tree of Perdition and Hateflayer let you kill any player at instant speed. Ertai, Wizard Adept and Staff of Domination let you counter one spell per player turn. You will hear some nervous laughs if you cage Empress Galina because she will let Mairsil steal any commander or planeswalker. Protect Mairsil from disruption with Giant Crab, Patchwork Gnomes or any one of the bouncing creatures. Take extra turns with Anthroplasm and Sage of Hours. Trigger more than one ability per turn with Pili-Pala. Use Nevinyrral's Disk to wipe the board, but bounce Mairsil until the end of turn with Aetherling after the ability goes on the stack to spare it from destruction.
